Peptides and bioactive actives are unlike almost anything else we source. With a Pilates reformer or an electric scooter, a defect is visible — a weld cracks, a battery fails a test. With a cosmetic active, the entire product is invisible chemistry in a bag of white powder, and the only thing standing between you and a formulation problem down the line is a piece of paper: the Certificate of Analysis. This is the category where buyers get burned quietly, months after the shipment clears customs, when a formulation doesn't perform the way it should — and by then the supplier relationship (and the paper trail) is much harder to unwind.
A Certificate of Analysis is only as good as what it actually tests
A CoA that lists a single purity percentage and nothing else is not a real CoA — it's a marketing document. What we look for on every batch: HPLC or LC-MS test results, not a summary purity claim — the raw chromatography data is what actually proves the number; third-party lab verification, independent of the manufacturer's own in-house testing; batch-specific data, matched to the actual lot number shipping to you — not a generic CoA reused across multiple production runs; heavy metals and residual solvent screening, which matters even for actives intended for topical formulation, not just ingestible ones.
If a supplier can only provide a one-page purity statement with no lab methodology behind it, that's not proof — it's a placeholder.
"98%+ purity" means nothing without knowing what the other 2% is
This is the question most buyers never ask. A 98% pure lyophilised active still has a 2% fraction that's either inert carrier, residual solvent, or — in a worse case — a related compound from an incomplete synthesis step. For formulation work, that 2% can matter as much as the headline purity number, particularly for stability and shelf life.
Ask for the full impurity profile, not just the top-line percentage.
ICH alignment is a starting point, not a guarantee
ICH-aligned manufacturing (following International Council for Harmonisation guidelines) tells you the facility follows recognized quality standards. It doesn't tell you the specific batch you're buying was actually produced and tested to that standard — facilities can be ICH-aligned on paper while individual production runs vary in practice.
This is why we insist on documentation tied to the actual lot, not the facility's general certification status.
Cold chain and stability during transit
Many bioactive actives are sensitive to temperature and humidity during the two to four weeks a shipment can spend in transit. A supplier with the right chemistry but the wrong packaging and logistics protocol can still hand you a degraded active by the time it reaches your formulation lab.
Ask specifically how the batch is packaged for export and whether stability data exists for that transit window.
